Kolkata, beside the river Hugli grew into being the capital of India during the British Rule and the second capital city of the British Empire. Also, this city of palaces is known for its neoclassical mansions, as one gets to see an architectural mix of Palladian, Baroque, Rococo, Gothic, Hindu and Islamic. Kolkata’s unique history and modern identity is reflected in its architecture, literature, cinema, and music. Kolkata is home of extraordinary Indians such as Nobel Prize in literature- Rabindranath Tagore, Nobel Prize in Economic Science- Amartya Sen, Academy Awardee- Satyajit Ray.

Kolkata is the city of learning, The Vishva Bharati (communication of the world with India) University was founded by Rabindranath Tagore in 1921, today is one of the India’s most renowned places of higher learning with a list of alumni that includes Nobel Prize in Economic Science-Satyajit Ray and the country’s leading art historian, R Siva Kumar to name just a few.

Today, Kolkata is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal, it is also the modern India’s cultural capital city of artists, city of learning and books with the largest second hand book market in the world, largest book market in India and largest library in India, Second largest planetarium in the world, largest museum in India and largest botanical gardens (World’s Largest Banyan tree in area covered which is 1250 years old), a Kolkata surely attracts the learned and historians.
